Safety in the freight and transportation industry
Freight and transportation are the backbone of the economy, but the public has a very poor view of heavy trucks. They are seen as machines that dominate the road and cause collisions, congestion and noise pollution.
From a statistical point of view, heavy truck drivers are safer than car drivers, and the probability of an accident per mile is half that of car drivers, but the size and weight of heavy trucks means that when a collision does occur, the consequences may be much greater.
Generally, the larger the vehicle, the lower the visibility of the driver, and the HGV may have a large number of blind spots on the rear, sides, front, and near sides of the cab. Many accidents involving vulnerable road users, especially cyclists, are caused by near-side blind spots.
